 Cut Scenes

Company:

Microprose

Project:

Star Trek: A World for All Seasons

Platform/Format:

3DO

Description:

This cut scene introduced an ambitious interactive experience for the ill-fated 3DO gaming system. Star Trek: A World for All Seasons allowed users to explore a multi-threaded plot from the perspective of any of four ST:TNG characters. The opening had to tease the user with each of the plot threads, which could be explored immediately after the conclusion of the opening.

Notes:

In the scene, Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise have received a distress call from a Federation-affiliated entrepreneur who is building a climataformer for Pallarius, a planet located near the Romulan Neutral Zone...

1. INT Bridge of the Enterprise NIGHT

All of the Senior Officers are gathered on the Bridge of the Enterprise. Captain Picard stands in front of his chair, looking into the Viewscreen at the growing image of Pallarius.

DATA

Standby to enter standard orbit.

RIKER

I don’t like this Magnus character already.

PICARD

His work in climataforming is very important to the Federation. Someday we will run out of Class M Planets. The Federation then will face hard choices. Or turns to people like Magnus.

RIKER

Anyone who gets themselves in a mess with the Romulans and then demands our help-

WORF

No trace of a Romulan ship.

PICARD

Take us to Yellow Alert, Mister Worf.

Klaxon sounds. Bridge flashes to Yellow Alert.

RIKER

They crossed the Neutral Zone to take one of his transports? Whatever’s on that transport better be good.

PICARD

Scan for a trace of the Magnus transport.

WORF

Undetected. It may be too small. Captain. Three small craft approaching. Bearing 307, Mark 2. Unmanned drones. One armed with phasers. They are moving quite fast.

PICARD

Red alert. Drones on screen.

Worf presses a key at his console. Klaxon sounds. Bridge goes to Red Alert. Worf presses a few more keys, and the drones are on the Viewscreen as specks. A beat, then the image is amplified.

RIKER

And where is our friend Magnus now? This "client population" appears quite capable of defending itself.

WORF

Captain. The drones are accelerating. Range one hundred ten thousand kilometers and closing.

2. EXT Space NIGHT

Three drones are approaching the CAMERA. The one in the middle is a little larger and looks different from the other two. They roar past quite close, leaving a trail of engine noise. CAMERA tracks drones, who are heading directly for the Enterprise.

3. INT Bridge of the Enterprise NIGHT

PICARD

Shields up. Ready phasers. Take one, Mister Worf.

4. EXT Space NIGHT

Ship phasers fire. The center drone explodes. The explosion is enormous, buffeting the other drones slightly off course. They glide back into formation.

5. INT Bridge of the Enterprise NIGHT

WORF

Drone is destroyed. The others have not turned back. Range one hundred thousand kilometers.

PICARD

Continue firing, Mister Worf.

Worf presses buttons on his console.

6. Space NIGHT

Phaser fire. Drone dodges.

7. Bridge of the Enterprise NIGHT

WORF

Missed! They are very quick.

PICARD

Stay with them, Worf.

Worf continues firing. INTERCUT his pressing of keys with exterior shots of ships dodging and puzzled looks of the Enterprise crew.

WORF

They are extremely quick.

Finally,

WORF

(Klingon curse) Hit. One to go, sir. Closing very fast.

RIKER

Keep it away from the ship, Worf.

WORF

Yes, Commander. Retargeting phasers for short range.

CAMERA looks over the shoulder of Worf towards the Viewscreen. Drone is on screen, closing fast.

WORF

Firing. No.

RIKER

Lead it.

WORF

Firing. No. It is too fast.

PICARD

Maximum shields. Prepare for impact.

Image of the drone grows onto the screen, appearing like it will blast right into the Bridge. Drone roars past, as if it has moved behind the Enterprise. A beat. A tremendous shudder rocks the ship. Bridge officers are nearly knocked from their feet.

RIKER

Damage report.

LAFORGE

Drone is embedded in the second warp coil on the right nacelle. Main deflector shield is down! Warp core temperature is skyrocketing.

PICARD

Shut down main warp engines.

WORF

Captain! Warbird decloaking on our bow! Their weapons are fully powered!

ALL turn to the Viewscreen. A Warbird materializes, with a transport in tow.

PICARD

All power to forward shields. Ready photon torpedoes.

WORF

Captain, we are receiving a transmission...It is not from the Warbird. It is from Pallarius.

PICARD

(turns head) Are you sure?

WORF

Yes, sir. It is weak, but I can boost it.

PICARD

(beat) Onscreen.

Viewscreen image is replaced by gray-scale, fuzzy image of a creature dressed in ornamental robes. It is difficult to identify facial features.

V.O.

Leave our world and let us die. The gods have so decreed.

CLOSE UP on Picard who gives a puzzled/alarmed expression.

FADE OUT.
